INSPECTION, ACCEPTANCE AND COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL OF CONNECTED DEVICES
Connected Portable Traffic
Signals (CPTS) must meet the requirements found in the Manual on Uniform
Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD 11th Edition) Part 6L.06 and Iowa DOT
Specification Article
2528.03.G. Automated Flagger Assistance Devices (AFADs) must meet the
requirements found in the MUTCD (11th Edition) Part 6L.02 and the
Iowa DOT Specification Article
2528.03.O.2.a. CPTS and AFADs utilized on the Primary Highway System must
utilize GPS and Communications requirements set forth in Article 4188.11 and this IM.
Approval Request Submittal Form: When a vendor is requesting the Department to evaluate its ability to meet 4188.11 and this IM, the vendor shall make a device for testing available either by delivery to Ames, Iowa or virtually. Complete and submit the form “ Connected Temporary Traffic Control Device Approval Request Form” found Here:

Communications Protocol: The WZDx Device Feed will be required to be Version 4.1 or greater and using the Traffic Signal Object for each temporary traffic signal deployed in Iowa. APPROVED PRODUCTS
Approved Products of CPTS meeting the requirements of Article 4188.11 will be listed in Appendix B of this IM within MAPLE. Approved Products for AFADs meeting the requirements of Article 4188.11 will be listed in Appendix C of this IM within MAPLE.
MAPLE does not list regular portable temporary traffic signals.
ACCEPTANCE
Acceptance of CPTS and AFADs, as well as retrofit kits for both are by Brand Name as listed in MAPLE.
