PLASTIC PIPE
Plastic pipe shall be manufactured from Polyethylene (PE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Poly vinyl chloride (PVC), Polypropylene, Steel Reinforced Polyethylene (SRPE) or Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) material.
Plastic Pipe utilized on federally funded projects shall be manufactured in the USA.
Application for plant approval shall be made to the Construction and Materials Bureau in Ames, Iowa, and shall include product technical information and a description of product quality control procedures. For plastic pipe types covered by the AASHTO Product evaluations and Audit Solutions workplan, a current report of successful AASHTO Product Evaluations and Audit Solutions Plant audit will be required for Plant Approval.
Initial approval will be based on the review of information submitted with the application for approval. Continued approval will be based on yearly reports of successful AASHTO Product Evaluations and Audit Solutions plant audits.
Approved plastic pipe plants are listed in the Materials Approved Products Listing Enterprise (MAPLE).
The approved manufacturer shall furnish, with each shipment, a certified bill of materials or invoice which identifies the contractor, project number, number of meters (feet) of pipe of each size, and number of pieces of couplings and fittings. This document must also contain itemized product information and quantities and indicate the individual standards met for each product type. Jobbers or other suppliers of material from an approved manufacturer shall furnish the above information along with a certificate of compliance as indicated below.
One copy of the certified bill of materials or invoice shall accompany each shipment and shall remain at the delivery point for the project inspector or shall be forwarded directly to the project engineer within Doc Express.
The fabricator, intermediate distributor or Prime contractor shall provide summary quantity documentation to the Project Engineer for shipments to each project. It shall include the project number, type and size of items furnished, and the total quantity of each. The certificate of compliance will indicate compliance to the applicable specifications, Example follows:

A designated representative shall sign the certification statement on summary documentation.
Acceptance:
All plastic pipe types require compliance and documentation as required within IM 107.
Plastic pipe, couplings, and fittings for storm sewers, sanitary sewers or culverts shall meet the requirements of Section 4146 and 4149 of the Standard Specification of the Iowa Department of Transportation or applicable developmental specification. Certification to the appropriate specification and/or documentation indicating compliance to the specification is required.
PVC conduit and HDPE conduit will be accepted on certification of compliance / test report data.
Acceptance of HDPE, Polypropylene and PVC for use as culverts will be based on approved source.
Other Plastic pipe types and applications, such as SRPE, that are not covered by an AASHTO Product Evaluation and Audit Solution program will be accepted based on meeting the specifications as provided in the standard specs, Developmental specifications, Special Provisions or Project plans as specified.
Samples taken for PVC conduit and HDPE conduit shall be as per IM 204az. The sample shall contain the date and plant code.
Whenever possible, samples shall be taken at the plant or from stock prior to shipment to the project. The supplier should notify the District Materials Engineer with project responsibility, of pending shipments so that sampling can be arranged. Shipments of materials that have not been sampled for the project shall include extra lengths for sampling at the project site.
A monitor test sample shall consist of amounts and rates as indicated in IM 204az. Deficient test results or poor workmanship on any monitor sample may be considered sufficient cause for removing a plant from the list of approved suppliers. Failure to maintain a report of successful AASHTO Product Evaluations and Audit Solutions Plant Audit yearly shall be considered cause for removal of a facility from the list of approved suppliers.
