Section 2425. Precast Prestressed Concrete Deck Panels.
2425.01 DESCRIPTION.
This specification describes precast prestressed concrete deck panels to be used in
the construction of bridge decks. When authorized in the contract documents, these
panels may be used in construction of the deck, at the option of the Contractor, in
lieu of the usual removable floor forms. The panels shall remain in place, and they
are designed as part of the deck in the completed structure. When the option is
authorized, the contract documents will include details of the panels and their use.
2425.02 MATERIALS.
The panels shall be produced in accordance with requirements in the contract documents,
Section 2407, and the following:
A. Concrete Placement.
The concrete for the panels shall be consolidated by vibration, and air entrainment will be required, in accordance with Article 2407.03.
2425.03 DESIGN.
The panels shall be fabricated according to the details shown in the contract documents
and the approved shop drawings. Shop drawings shall be submitted in accordance with
Article 1105.03. On skewed decks, the Contractor may form
and cast the skewed portion of the deck, or skewed end deck panels may be used. The skewed
end panels shall be individually precast. In no case shall a panel have less than a 2 foot
(600 mm) bearing length along its edge.
2425.04 CONSTRUCTION.
The panels shall be set in place over strips of preformed joint filler, the reinforcement
shall be placed as shown in the contract documents, and the concrete of the deck shall
be placed, consolidated, finished, and cured. Prior to placement of the concrete, the top
surface of each panel and beam shall be cleaned as designated in the contract documents.
The panel surface shall be dry and dust free when cast-in-place concrete is placed on the
panel.
2425.05 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT AND BASIS OF PAYMENT.
If the Contractor elects to use precast prestressed concrete panels in the operations,
measurement and payment for construction of the deck will be based on the plan quantities
for the various items involved and the contract prices therefor, with no adjustment because
of this option.
